Vodafone mobile solutions making tangible contributions to Government
Since first being granted an operating licence for cellular telecommunications in 1983, Vodafone has established and maintained close relationships with all levels of government. Over time Vodafone has put in place a wide spectrum of products and services to provide a total communications solution for the public sector organisations, to enable them to run their business effectively and competitively.
Vodafone Corporate has been a key supplier to the public sector including contracts with local, regional and central government departments such as the Ministry of Defence, the NHS and the emergency services. Since September 2000 Vodafone has been a 'strategic partner' of mobile phones and data solutions the through the OGC's GTM framework agreement, enabling the public sector to receive substantial benefits in mobile communication solutions and services.
The development of applications for the public sector has always been a high priority for Vodafone and a number of solutions have already been implemented to the address this important market place. The practical use of mobile solutions and emerging technologies is now making tangible contributions to many areas of government.
Fit For Purpose Solutions
The public sector now has greater choice and flexibility to find solutions that meet their unique requirements. Products that enhance flexible working practices, like Vodafone Mobile Connect, Blackberry and Vodafone Rapide, extend traditional office based applications to almost any location.
True remote access via Vodafone Mobile Connect brings a range of benefits to remote workers "Always on" connectivity of GPRS, eliminates repetitive and time-consuming reconnections. The Remote Access Client is designed to enable single-click access to the corporate LAN. Cost savings through data volume charging rather than time based charging, meaning "thinking and reading is free".
Vodafone Mobile Connect Card, equipped with a GPRS-enabled SIM, provides a simple, secure, 'out-of-the-box' solution for remote workers who wish to have secure, resilient access to e-mail, Intranets and legacy systems when away from the office. When inserted into the 'PCMCIA' socket of a laptop, this is a quick and reliable way of sending and receiving data while 'on the move.
Developed by the Canadian company 'Research in Motion', the BlackBerry handheld device uses Vodafone GPRS and as a result is continuously connected to the wireless network. The unique 'push' technology ensures that emails, forms and calendar appointments are forwarded to the BlackBerry device wherever it may be. The solution requires minimal implementation and can be carried out by an internal it department.
Field based staff, such as social services, district nurses and midwives under increasing time pressures and as demand escalates for their services the requirement for practical mobile solutions is more evident. The introduction of remote working solutions like the Blackberry from Vodafone provide a simple and cost effective communications media that meets this demand.
With all modern technology things change quickly, with the focus on the internet and e-commerce, Vodafone is working closely with government on a number of initiatives including; Text Messaging services to reduce 'do not attends' in the NHS, to remind tenants that their rent is due or to provide the public with a flood warning. With the increased mobility we have today over 69 per cent of the population have a mobile phone, and by using text messaging it is becoming easier to contact people - when it really matters. Text Messaging provides an accurate and direct method of communication and is becoming an essential communication media.
The use of Picture Messaging in public sector is still in its infancy. However, it is currently being used in a number of radiology departments and by the security forces, it enables staff to send an image over a mobile phone to colleagues or support staff - it's as easy as sending a standard text message. Picture messaging provides a quick, direct and cost-effective method of transmitting images, all that is required is a mobile handset that's able to take, send picture messages and an e-mail address. Doctors and the police believe it is a cost-effective use of technology.
