ST GEORGE PLC
Land is our most precious resource. How it is developed and how it is used, particularly in sensitive inner-city areas, creates a lasting legacy.

St George plc is London's leading residential mixed-use developer, and in 2002 became the only property developer to have received The Queens Award for Enterprise: Sustainable Development.

100 per cent of St George schemes are on brownfield sites in London - land which has lain dormant often for many years. Whilst the development of such regeneration sites typically has many inherent complications, several years ago St George identified the need for a new breed of developer, one who realises the importance of the sustainability agenda.

For St George this means creating high-quality, vibrant and dynamic developments for a range of uses which are sensitive to environmental, heritage and built-environment concerns. The end results are new homes and destinations where people enjoy living, working and visiting.

Today, St George is bringing back into use over 100 acres of derelict land including former gas works, cold stores and railway sidings. Many of these sites have lain derelict for a very long time. For example, at Charter Quay in Kingston a contemporary mixed-use scheme dovetailed into the historic town centre is also providing a 1,100-seat theatre, 244 homes, a major bookshop and a variety of cafes, bars and restaurants. These business uses are creating almost 300 new jobs. The scheme also includes five new routes to and from the town centre, and St George has opened up the river walk to the public from where they can enjoy the new wetland areas which are now attracting a host of wildlife.

At Imperial Wharf in Fulham, St George are generating a new sustainable community. Two million square feet of mixed-use development includes offices, shops, restaurants, bars, cafes, an hotel and other facilities. The scheme will create 1,665 homes of which 50 per cent will be affordable. Major community investment is being provided, including a new 10-acre public park on the riverside. A major Employment and Training programme, subsidised business rents and improvements to the local school and transport facilities, including a new rail station, are bringing wider benefits to this neighbourhood. Over 1,000 jobs will be created from this scheme, which is being built on a former gas works site that was zoned for employment use. By intelligent use of this land, both homes and jobs are being delivered.

These, and many other developments, demonstrate how sustainable communities can be successfully generated, maximising the social, environmental and economic benefits of mixed-use, mixed-tenure developments.
