PROGRAMME AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT - THE CHALLENGE
The Government's declared top priority is to improve public services. This requires clear leadership from the top and better delivery on the ground. Improved programme and project management has a key role to play in meeting this challenge. To achieve a two- to three-fold improvement in the success of central government projects, the Government embarked upon an initiative to establish Programme and Project Management Centres of Excellence within each government department.

A track record of excellence
Establishing a Project Professionals Group at the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

As part of a long-term relationship with DWP, Parity provides project-related courses to increase the skills and competencies of project staff at all levels of the department. Driven by the desire to improve the standard of project delivery and establish a world-class resource of project managers, DWP initiated the phased implementation of a Project Professionals Group (PPG). A major programme of skills analysis was undertaken by Parity to establish and record the training needs of the 327 nominated staff who would make up the core expertise of DWP's PPG. Through structured interviews, speciality-based questionnaires and online capabilities assessments, a professional development plan was produced for each staff member.

This is the first stage in implementing a policy of providing recognition for project skills, formal accreditation and improved career opportunities through the provision of training and development opportunities. The core members of the PPG will influence and support the other project professionals within the DWP, who will join the PPG as associate members and receive ongoing training and development.

Parity's reputation for learning and development of IT and business skills is well established and Parity was awarded the Institute of IT Training's Training Company of the Year award in February 2003 as a testament to its customer care and quality.

Parity's involvement with its customers on a strategic level and the long-term connections it has throughout industry, government and the learning sector allows Parity to enable organisations and individuals to reach their goals.
