MUNTERS
Munters is one of the UK's leading water- and fire-damage restoration, leak-detection and temporary humidity control firms with more than 50 years' experience in the industry. The company operates six regional service centres across the country to provide its UK-wide services and deals with contracts from major insurance companies and loss adjusters. Local authority and public-sector claims make up a large proportion of Munters' business.

Munters is able to deal with any size claim, from the smallest domestic radiator leak to major commercial flooding or fire. In the case of water damage, the company has set an industry trend with the introduction of its new 'Drying Certificate', which gives customers peace of mind that their property is dry. The certificate guarantees a property has been dried out to pre-existing moisture levels. The company also has a flood claims surge plan, which is put into action when there is risk of a massive demand for its services. Clients are serviced via a national customer contact centre.

Munters' staff are all directly employed by the company to ensure consistent service levels throughout the UK. Ongoing training and development means employees are always up to date on new techniques, technology, service and customer care. Many Munters' senior technicians have passed an advanced course in moisture mechanics from Goteburg University in Sweden - the highest qualification in the industry. As standard, all technicians wear liveried outfits, carry ID badges and drive fully fitted and equipped vans bearing the company logo.

Munters was among the finalists in both the Insurance Times Awards 2002 and British Insurance Awards 2002 Service Provider of the Year category and won the Technology category in this year's British Insurance Awards. The company has Investor in People accreditation and is also certified according to the quality standard ISO 9001:2000.

The firm, founded by Swedish inventor Carl Munters, has its UK headquarters in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire. The technology on which the company's products and services are based is the result of his extensive research in basic principles of heat and humidity transfer. Munters is now an international company with a presence in more than 25 countries and listed on the Swedish stock exchange. Its global headquarters are in Stockholm, Sweden. Munters began its UK operations in 1946.

In the past five years the company has grown by 500 per cent and is currently expanding four of its six regional offices to cope with the surge in demand for its services.

Calling in the experts
Munters' approach to dealing with fire and water-damage claims is to get there first and get there fast. The first 24 hours can be the most crucial when dealing with a restoration claim. Mitigating action taken in the early stages can mean damaged documents, machinery and equipment stand a far better chance of being successfully restored. Prompt action can also ensure business continuity and reduce disruption to a minimum.

Commercial and domestic claims
Examples of Munters' rapid response include the restoration of council housing offices and paperwork for Spelthorne Council in Middlesex following a suspected arson attack. The majority of urgent paper work damaged by the fire was restored and returned to the council within 48 hours of the blaze, allowing housing officers to carry on their work as usual. Meanwhile, when a flash flood threatened to close Long Meadow School in Milton Keynes for weeks, Munters' technicians worked alongside heating engineers, flooring contractors, plumbers and carpenters in a 'chain of process' to re-open the building in double-quick time.

Munters' expertise was also called upon by Moray Council in Scotland when floods devastated the town of Elgin. Clean-up teams dried out more than 180 flood-damaged council homes and a further 110 privately owned properties. Technicians also dealt with a number of commercial claims in the town, including the restoration of Scottish Water's water-treatment works, the town hall, and a resource centre and council depot.

Environmental control
Munters' Temporary Humidity Control Services (THC) are specialists in environmental control for everything from power stations and aircraft carriers, to museums and pharmaceutical factories. The team are acknowledged experts in architectural refurbishment projects. Examples of this include maintaining environmental conditions during the refurbishment of the Royal Opera House, Mansion House and Tate Britain. THC's expertise was also called upon by Warwickshire County Council when it needed to maintain strict environmental control of the county's record office during a £2m refurbishment. Documents dating back hundreds of years were safely preserved for future generations. A large fleet of dehumidifiers and heaters is available for short- or long-term hire, along with technical advice and expertise on controlling humidity levels and drying in any industry or environment.

Leak detection
Small plumbing leaks inside walls or in the ground can cause major water damage as it can take a long time before they are noticed. Munters' technicians have extensive experience in finding leaks and can often pinpoint the exact location of a burst pipe and save a considerable amount of time and money for the customers. While traditional leak detection involves extensive work or excavations behind walls or under concrete floors, new technology is making that a thing of the past. By using some of the most sophisticated detection equipment available, Munters is able to pinpoint seemingly undetectable leaks quickly and accurately. This means swift remedial action, little structural damage and reduced costs. Munters is currently working on a series of 1970's council properties for Milton Keynes County Council, which are prone to leaking pipes. Thermographic technology is also used to detect leaks in flat roofs and identify heat-loss from buildings. It can also identify 'hot spots' in electrical circuits and fuse boxes.
