Milecastle Housing
MILECASTLE HOUSING
The company was set up in 1999 as a not-for-profit organisation with the main purpose of providing and managing homes for people who need them most.
Originally called Tynedale Housing, the company was set up with the help of Tynedale Council to take a transfer of its homes. It provides quality, affordable homes for rent in the Tynedale area of Northumberland, with responsibility for managing over 3,100 homes.
After four successful years of operating under the name of Tynedale Housing and also sharing premises with the local council, it was decided to move to our own new purpose-built head office and to officially change the name to Milecastle Housing.
Providing affordable, quality homes
The company has a policy of striving for quality, affordability and fairness in everything it does and is run by an unpaid Board including councillors, tenants and independent representatives from the local community.
It also encourages tenants to be involved in the services provided, recognising the important role that tenants play in the way services are shaped and delivered. Committed to giving tenants the opportunity to become involved in decision-making, area forums are now active in different parts of Tynedale, made up of local tenant representatives who provide feedback and discuss any concerns on behalf of tenants.
Earlier this year, Milecastle Housing received a huge boost after the Housing Corporation confirmed that the company was one of four associations to be granted official partnering status under the new NEET Partnership.
This means that, together with Enterprise 5, Endeavour HA and Newcastle and Whitley Housing Trust, the partnership has netted a massive £51mn to build or renovate homes, creating a major jobs boost for the north-east.
The corporation is giving the partnership its biggest grant allocation in the region for 2004/6 of £29.2mn. Over 498 new homes will be developed over the next two years in 16 north-east local authorities, bringing over 785 jobs with it.
Increasing and improving housing stock
Alongside this, Milecastle Housing continues to develop and maintain its own housing stock. It is nearing completion of the 'Chains', in Corbridge, its first big flagship scheme. The £1.6mn development is adding 27 new homes to the company's stock. Working alongside Charles Church (North East) on the Chains, Milecastle Housing hopes this will be the first of many more such schemes.
Other developments in areas like Bellingham and Barrasford are continuing to provide affordable homes to those that need them most in Tynedale. At present, Milecastle Housing has 3,158 homes on its books and it's a figure that is continuing to grow.
In addition, the company invests, on average, £3mn per annum on maintenance and improvements to its properties.
There are many challenges ahead for the company. It is well-documented that there is a growing shortage of affordable homes in Tynedale and this is an issue that Milecastle Housing is determined to continue to address.
