Mentor
Mentor - Seasoned Professionals Supporting Your Aims
Mentor was established in 1987 and has become a highly successful mid-sized consultancy, whose primary business is the provision of strategic, management and technical consultancy services in the areas of:

.  Telecommunications
.  Information systems and information technology
.  Broadcast media
.  Business Management
.  Programme Management

Mentor establishes long term relationships with its public and private sector clients based upon an unrivalled reputation for the quality of the services it provides and for its unbroken track record of delivering to time, cost and specification. Typically, Mentor works in key roles on high risk ventures that are vital to the achievement of the organisation's strategic ambitions.

The Mentor business model is founded on achieving results by using only exceptionally experienced professionals, who are generally acknowledged leaders in their field, to work at the very highest levels in consultancy assignments and programmes using a structured methodology. Most Mentor consultants have held Executive or General Management positions in Blue Chip corporations such as British Telecom, Nortel, IBM Global Services, Ericsson and CSC Computer Sciences. As a matter of policy Mentor does not recruit career consultants from the big firms or recent graduates, preferring instead people with a balance between technical expertise and practical implementation experience in a real business environment. This depth and breadth of experience provides the basis for Mentor's reputation for offering its customers pragmatic advice and assistance, delivered professionally and competently even when dealing with contentious issues in a sensitive client environment.

Throughout its fifteen year history Mentor has been committed to offering clients exceptional value for money (VFM). This is achieved by successfully delivering on its commitments at an overall price that is set to be competitive with the best available in the industry. To further underpin confidence in the assignment VFM, Mentor often undertakes work at a fixed price or within a mutually agreed risk/reward fee structure.

A standard assignment model involves assessing a situation through a Concept Design phase for a fixed price followed by a detailed Discovery and Planning phase also for a fixed price. It is in this second phase that detailed project delivery timescales, resource, financials and deliverables are drawn up and committed. The Mentor model then moves to the Implementation phase, where the client can fully control the VFM characteristics of the assignment by the use of a risk/reward fee structure. The guiding principle on risk and reward is, the greater management and leadership control Mentor has over the project, the greater the risks Mentor will undertake. The final stage is the handover, training and support to the Client which would typically be undertaken for a fixed price.

Mentor uses small high calibre teams who can 'make a difference' in preference to the standard consultancy model of using many consultants across a very wide experience spectrum. Mentor's approach to assignments also lends itself to the progressive transfer of skills and knowledge to a wide community within the client organisation thereby leaving the client far better equipped to manage future ventures solely from internal resources.

Through most of its history Mentor has worked with major companies within the private sector with long term clients including Channel 5, Hutchison3G, BT, Virgin, O2 and Ericsson. These, and other clients, regularly endorse the quality of the services provided by Mentor but it is the nature of the endorsements that are somewhat exceptional as the table below illustrates:

Client Endorsements - Source Moffatt Associates

"Mentor had done very similar things for us in the past so I knew [Mentor] was up to speed and knew what we needed to do and had gone about the process before."

"I would trust Mentor to, if they say they're going to deliver it, deliver it." "If I had gone to one of the major Consultants it would probably have cost me more & we would not be where we are now. I needed doers, people who make things happen rather than flashy stuff."

"...they know the industry inside out...they are seasoned guys steeped in what they do..."

"If we had something that got off the rails, or was really tough, I could pick up the phone..."

"These aren't young guys straight out of university or straight out of some other consultancy. They have actualy done the job..."

"They have people with fantastic experience who have actually been through the fire."

"...very few people have what they have..."

"On behalf of my TDN coleagues may I take this opportunity to thank you for your co-operation over the last five years and say what a pleasure it has been to work with your organisation."

"Greater comfort was going to come from using Mentor because of their past delivery performance."

In recent times, Mentor has extended its market reach to meet the opportunities presented when the government declared its intent to utilise best practice from the private sector to help improve performance in the public sector. Mentor is now an appointed OGCbuying.solutions S-CAT supplier for Category 9 - Telecommunications Consultancy and Category 12 - Business Management Consultancy (including Programme Management) and is involved with a number of clients across the public sector.

Mentor was recommended to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) by OGC specifically to strengthen programme management capability within the Department's ?2.5 billion Modernisation Programme and assisted the DWP in a number of areas within this massive programme.

Mentor worked with the ITC as part of the huge Channel 5 Retuning programme and has subsequently been involved in digital TV developments including providing advice to the DCMS regarding Digital Switchover. Mentor is also involved with several of the constituent groups of the Digital Television Stakeholders group.

In conclusion, Mentor has established an unrivalled reputation amongst both its private and public sector clients for promising no more than can be delivered and managing the delivery as promised. This approach is possible because Mentor only deploys outstanding consultants who have actually 'been through the fire' and can therefore bring direct delivery experience to address the Client's business problems.
