Landmark Information Group
INTEGRATED GEOSPATIAL SERVICES FROM LANDMARK SOLUTIONS
Landmark Information Group (www.landmarkinfo.co.uk) has more experience of managing spatial data produced by central and local government than many better-known contractors but, since its foundation in 1995, the Exeter-based company has concentrated on delivering specialised map-based services to professional markets: chartered surveyors, architects, civil engineers, environmental consultants and conveyancing solicitors.

The success of these services has made Landmark the largest reseller of data derived from Ordnance Survey, the Environment Agency, British Geological Survey and a number of other public-sector information providers. This has involved building one of the largest geographical information systems in the United Kingdom, as information from all the data providers is integrated into a single system, covering the whole of mainland Britain.

The Landmark database currently contains over 100 datasets from over 30 organisations, together with data from over 400 local authorities in Great Britain. This database includes:
.  Over 10 million features
.  National coverage of the United Kingdom from both OS MasterMap(r) and OS Land-Line(r)
.  700,000 large-scale OS maps covering the whole of mainland Britain from 1850-1980.

Landmark Solutions (www.ligsolutions.co.uk) believes that this database, along with the expertise developed in its creation and management, holds the key to many of the problems faced by the public sector in using geography to deliver joined-up information services both to the citizen and internally, to manage the business of government.

In 2000 Landmark began selectively seeking government contracts, and in October 2002 took the plunge and established a new business unit with its own management and business plan. Landmark Solutions' mission focuses on the specialised requirements of central and local government, with a range of products and services specifically tailored to meet those needs.

Landmark believes that the approach developed with their customers in the private sector will be welcomed by both central and local government. The strategic idea is that they invest in building accessible map-based information services that are ready for use by a wide variety of different customers with only a small amount of customisation. This spreads the core cost of building the system and reduces the cost of procurement and the time elapsed between identifying a problem and implementing a solution. They believe they can eliminate many of the problems historically associated with geographical information systems in government. Contrary to popular belief, these systems can be inexpensive, easy to use and delivered on time.

One of Landmark's key differentiators is its close association with its offshore partner, RMSI. This partnership enables Landmark to offer a quality and cost-effective delivery capability from resources based both in the UK and offshore in India.

RMSI are specialists in software development, digitising and combining maps, geocoding, satellite imagery, remote sensing, web development and hosting, aerial photography and survey data. Together, Landmark Solutions and RMSI can source and convert spatial data and create bespoke database solutions for public-sector organisations. Paper-based maps can be digitised and address-based datasets can be accurately geocoded to the National Grid.

The Landmark-RMSI partnership has over 11 years' experience in geospatial products and services. This experience, supported by over 700 technical GIS experts, delivers flexible, innovative solutions on time and within budget. Landmark and RMSI have already successfully completed projects for a number of government agencies including the British Geological Survey, the National Assembly for Wales, English Nature, Sport England and the Countryside Council for Wales.
