John Packer Associates Limited
DESIGN FOCUSED ON SUSTAINABILITY
John Packer Associates (JPA) is a broad-based mechanical and electrical engineering design consultancy. Established in 1991, it has developed into a multi-disciplined practice offering a range of design, project management, inspection and commissioning support.

The emphasis is on a proactive, original and innovative approach, designing solutions to client's needs. Increasingly, we have taken the lead in designing low-energy, sustainable solutions, in line with current thinking and legislation, in order to reduce energy usage and protect the environment.

We have specialist knowledge in the low-energy and sustainable design of buildings. Detailed knowledge of how buildings actually perform has provided the skills necessary to either design out, or significantly reduce, the need for energy-consuming and polluting engineering systems such as mechanical ventilation and air-conditioning, and to reduce the consumption of precious resources, including water.

Principles of low energy and sustainable design are employed on all projects where practicable and appropriate. Often these design changes are quite discrete and 'invisible'. Some projects embrace this philosophy to a much greater extent, making a clear statement of intent.

We are registered consultants for the Design Advice Service, which is managed by the Carbon Trust on behalf of the government. This is a scheme by which registered consultants are able to provide a one-day consultation to clients considering refurbishment or new-build projects over 500 square metres. We have carried out approximately 50 consultations on projects, ranging from a listed windmill to the futuristic 17-storey mixed-use tower block proposed for Newhaven.

The Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) is the methodology adopted by government and many private clients to assess the 'green' credentials of their projects. An in-depth analysis uses a point-scoring system to generate a rating ranging from 'pass', 'good', 'very good' to 'excellent'. All new government buildings are required to achieve 'excellent', and refurbishment projects at least 'very good'. JPA has trained two employees to be our nominated specialists, and to be accredited BREEAM assessors.

The Design Quality Indicator (DQI) is an initiative managed by the Construction Industry Council, sponsored by the DTI, OGC, CABE and Rethinking Construction, that considers the building-procurement process from the building occupier's point of view. The intention of the scheme is to improve the quality of buildings, paying more attention to the needs of the building occupants and the impact of the building on the local and global environment. JPA is one of approximately one hundred 'Trailblazers' and have registered six projects for inclusion, two of which have passed through the analysis so far.

John Packer Associates has an environmental policy that is ingrained in the philosophy of the company. Not only are all designs for client's produced with sustainability and protection of the environment in mind, but the company also makes every effort to recycle its waste products and conserve energy in its own workplace.
