Flowserve Pumps
PUMPING AT SEA IN THE 21ST CENTURY.
For many years Flowserve Pump Division's leading heritage names, such as Worthington-Simpson, have supplied pumping equipment for the Royal Navy, Royal Fleet Auxiliaries and various navies around the globe.

The operational requirements of surface-fighting ships and submarines call for the provision of fully dependable equipment. Our in-depth knowledge of such operating requirements coupled with over 100 years' experience of pump manufacture enables us to provide pumping equipment of many types, to sound engineering designs and high manufacturing standards. Our Newark facility is accredited to ISO 9001:2000 for quality assurance and we have a dedicated facility for the assembly, repair and test of naval pump units to ensure that our products meet the stringent requirements they face in the operational environment.

Our design engineers have worked with the MoD and shipbuilders over many years to achieve the necessary understanding of operational parameters in order that the finished products successfully perform through a long-service life. In addition, we have a team of suitably trained engineers available to work on board and at the waterfront when required, for specialist commissioning and repair work.

We are constantly looking for ways to improve our products and processes through the introduction of new methods, materials and innovative technology in an attempt to meet the government's ever more pressing requirement for better value for money.
Of course, this can only continue where there is a buoyant marketplace and, whilst it is encouraging to see proposed new ships for the fleet, it will be some time yet before these plans develop to a stage where large areas of industry are involved. Defence funding is a great concern, not only to the armed forces but also to the defence industry as a whole. There is a need to retain the skilled and qualified staff in the industry in order that future national strategic needs can be met. However, in times of fewer orders this becomes increasingly difficult to achieve. It is realised that the modern warship is, by definition, an expensive and sophisticated weapons platform. Unfortunately, due to competition for resources, gaps sometimes seem to appear in the spending plan, which make it almost impossible for industry to proceed with any certainty regarding recruitment and training. This is likely to have a detrimental effect not only on industry but also on the fighting forces in the longer term.

At Flowserve we take pride in our long association with the Royal Navy and in the knowledge that our products have been on board most of the major warships and submarines built for the fleet in the last half-century. We hope that this may continue.
