FEELING SAFER IN BRADFORD
Work carried out by the Bradford District Safer Communities Partnership aimed at reassuring the public is proving successful, with more people now saying that they feel safer on the streets - a view backed up by police, who say the chance of becoming a victim of crime is now the lowest for 20 years.
Results of a survey by West Yorkshire Police show that since the introduction of a wide variety of local initiatives such as street wardens, CCTV and park rangers, the number of residents reporting they felt safe walking alone during hours of darkness in their local area has increased to 40.85 per cent in the period 2002/3, up from 37.8 per cent in the previous year.
Police Superintendent Colin Western, Bradford District Community Safety Co-ordinator, said: "The reality is that Bradford is a safer place than many people would believe. This past year has seen offences slashed, and this has been achieved by all our partners working together to put the fear of crime back on the criminal, where it belongs. There's a real feel-good factor about Bradford and people need to start believing that it's here to stay."
Margaret Eaton, leader of Bradford Council, said: "This is good news for all of us. Residents need to be able to feel safe going about their business whether by day or night and these schemes are proving invaluable at providing reassurance. It shows that by working together through the Safer Communities Partnership, local agencies can make a real difference."
A £27mn scheme has been launched that will completely transform 16 Bradford city-centre blocks and create a safer environment for residents.
Bradford Community Housing Trust Group (BCHT) took over the district's 24,000 council homes in February 2003, and their five-year £175mn improvements programme is well underway with £40mn committed in the first year. A major aim of the programme is to improve quality of life and create safe and prosperous communities.
The group is an active member of the Bradford District Safer Communities Partnership. Across the district, it is working with a seconded police officer on 'Secure By Design', an anti-crime initiative making tenants safer in their homes by designing out crime opportunities, giving a standard of security that tenants want and thieves hate.
BCHT is also collaborating with the SPEED charity to make vulnerable tenants more secure by fitting locks and installing other safety devices. They have also linked up with Trading Standards to tackle doorstep crime.
One major project hit the headlines in March 2004 when Housing Minister Keith Hill officially launched a £27mn scheme to radically transform 16 Bradford city-centre blocks of flats and their immediate environment to provide security and safety for all who live there. The area already has a £1.6mn CCTV system funded by BCHT, Bradford Council and the Home Office, covering 900 homes and surrounding areas, which links up with the Bradford city-centre CCTV scheme. Through the Manchester Road area of the project will run the Living Street, enabling residents to walk through the neighbourhood in a well-lit, safe and visually engaging environment.
