ATKINS ~ making the complex simple
by Simon Moon, Director Defence Systems, Atkins.
With more than 14,000 professional staff, Atkins is the largest engineering consultancy in the UK and Europe's largest independent integrated engineering and management consultancy.
Our size, strength and experience enable us to plan and manage the delivery of complex programmes for clients in both the public and private sectors.
We are supporting major improvements at AWE and the relocation of GCHQ. Atkins is also a key player on major finance programmes in the UK, successfully closing 16 PFI / PPP projects to date including London Underground and Colchester Garrison. We are also playing key roles in the West Coast Mainline upgrade.
Atkins has revenues of over £100M/year in the defence and aerospace market, where we currently work extensively with both the MoD and industry in planning, enabling and delivering complex systems programmes.
We are a key supplier to industry leaders such as Rolls-Royce and Airbus. For Rolls-Royce we are delivering two major multi-million pound managed service contracts providing programme management and technical services on submarine propulsion. In addition, on Rolls-Royce's aerospace programmes, we provide technical and project management support to their Joint Strike Fighter and Civil Trent 1000 engines.
For Airbus, we are providing programme management and structural and systems engineering on the A380 and A400M aircraft development projects.
Our clients appreciate our ability to understand user requirements and translate them into realistic and achievable system requirements.
Because of our broad capability in engineering analysis and design, safety and supportability, programme management and systems engineering, Atkins is uniquely well-placed to provide a 'joined up' Systems House approach.
Take, as an example, FRES - the Future Rapid Effect System - the programme to deliver the next generation of medium-weight armoured vehicles for the Army, and with a capital spend of £6bn the largest MoD Land Systems programme ever undertaken.
Of paramount importance here is the need to effectively define the system requirements, the procurement strategy and to de-risk the programme. This will require an Atkins' team to work closely with all stakeholders, driving an initial assessment programme focused on making the complex simple, and delivering on what has been promised.
We are entirely independent from the supply chain, and therefore provide an objective view of approaches and technologies, combining the finest defence and aviation work with innovation and best-practice from different market sectors. We work with multiple organisations, and successfully manage complex supply-chains.
Our goal is simple - to enable our clients to meet their required in-service date, whilst achieving the right blend of performance, cost and risk.
Our record of achievement in this regard is second to none.
