Association for Project Management
Association for Project Management
We are forever being reminded that efficiency and innovation is what will keep British business competitive in the global market. In a recent DTI report on UK competitiveness Michael Porter stated that "Current levels of UK innovation are insufficient to drive UK productivity growth and close the UK productivity gap versus key competitors." The challenge is to innovate efficiently. How is this achieved? Does efficiency mean cutting costs back and stifling innovation, does innovation mean spending wildly in the hope of hitting gold? How do you do things differently without exposing your whole business?
Project management is the science and art of innovating efficiently. It is the process of understanding objectives, managing risks and maximising rewards. Because of this the Association for Project Management has grown to become the largest national project management professional body in Europe and the second largest in the world with 13,000 highly qualified and experienced individual and 260 corporate members from all sectors, professions and industries.
Supporting the profession

Membership
Methodologies and theories don't manage projects, people do. Above anything else we recognise that the best project managers achieve results through the appropriate application of their skills and their experience. APM Members have a minimum of five years project management experience, with nearly half having managed projects for over ten years. These are skilled and experienced professionals with a clear understanding of how projects should be managed to achieve results.
Our Professional Development services ensure that members can plan and develop their skills around their busy work and personal lives. APM is committed to supporting members with products and services designed to develop their skills and prospects, including books, magazines and events.
Our regional branch network operates across the UK and has offices in Hong Kong and Singapore. The branches are an easy and informal way for members to invest in their career providing the opportunity to meet with fellow professionals, develop skills, and learn about innovations and best practice through meetings, conferences and forums.
Members receive a free subscription to Project magazine, the voice of the profession, featuring news, case studies, updates and the reviews of all areas of the project management world from methodologies to software. It also gives the inside track on project management developments through our Specific Interest Groups; leading professionals dedicated to forwarding the profession. Added to this is a comprehensive range of national conferences and events run throughout the country designed to keep members in touch with the world of project management.
Qualifications
The common perception of project management is that it can be learnt by piecing together fragments of past experience. However it is not until you are managing a project, and confronted with the complex demands of suppliers, stakeholders and customers, does it become evident just how hard it is to combine these acquired skills successfully. The best Project Managers can integrate their skills and experience to ensure that their project is delivered on time, to specification and within budget. APM's qualifications are designed enable project managers to integrate these skills effectively by drawing on candidates' existing experience, adding new skills and linking them together.
The APMP qualification is designed to provide the foundation knowledge that enables project teams to talk a common language. This means that regardless of the industry or sector you are from or the methodology you are using, the project team can communicate efficiently, and all members of the team can understand and be focussed on the same goal. APMP is for those who already have some practical experience in managing projects, but want to add to their skills and understand how to combine them successfully.
For practicing Project Managers there is the APM Practitioner Qualification which enables candidates the opportunity to demonstrate an understanding of the wider issues and implications surrounding managing projects. Candidates are put into an assessment centre and observed managing a living case study through the entire project lifecycle. Assessors provide feedback to each candidate highlighting their strengths and weaknesses, helping to highlight where gaps in understanding may exist.
For the most experienced Project Managers, there is the prestigious Certificated Project Manager qualification, an assessment of competence and experience for senior Project Managers. Certificated Project Managers understand the strategic context of managing projects and can provide the assurance to customers that the services they order will be delivered to their specification. Certificated Project Managers not only give you best practice, but competitive advantage.
With practical project management skills being actively sought after, employers can no longer afford to wait for their employees to acquire the skills through trial and error. This simply takes too long, and is too unpredictable; waiting for these skills to become available will see competitive advantage, as an individual or a company, eroded away. To be associated with the APM is to be recognised as a practitioner in quality project management. Whether just starting out, or at the top of the profession, APM services are designed to meet the needs employers and employees to deliver benefits to your business.
